Telmex begins WiMAX deployment
Telmex has announced that it has begun deployment of a WiMAX network and equipment in Chile with an initial investment of USD15 million. Telmex won the right to operate the WiMAX network in December 2005 but the project was delayed because of a legal dispute with fixed line incumbent Telefonica Chile. ‘Today Telmex has begun the launch of what will be Chile's most modern wireless network, which in less than a year will be capable of covering 90% of the districts of Chile, which means 98% of the population,’ said Eduardo Diaz, Telmex's chief executive in Chile. The company, owned by Mexican magnate Carlos Slim, has already begun installing WiMAX equipment and transmission antennas aacross the country, each with a range of around 32 miles.
